                                                       Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD)

CSSD is a centralized department catering to the sterilization need of the entire hospital.

The purpose of the Central Sterile Supply Department(CSSD) is to make reliable and sterilized articles available at the required time and place for any agreed purpose in the hospital as economically as possible, having regard to the need to conserve the time of to all departments, wards, operation theatres and intensive care units. The CSSD is responsible for increasing the efficiency, economy and uniformity of supplies.

In our hospital we have a well established CSSD at the basement floor and two fully functioning Theatre Sterile Supply Units (TSSU) attached to Operation Theaters in the first floor and ground floor. Technically qualified staff at CSSD deliver their duties promptly to enhance the round the clock sterilization requirements of the hospital.

At present we have two CSSD Technicians and four CSSD Assistants working in the department. The department is designated into three separate areas as wash area, clean area and sterile zone where workflow such as collection, decontamination, washing and disinfection, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments and medical devises takes place in a unidirectional way.

The equipments in CSSD such as Sterilizers, Washer Disinfector, Ultrasonic cleaner, Instrument Drier, Water Distillation and Storage Unit, Hot and Cold Sterilizer, Dressing material Cutting Machine etc facilitates the day to day activities.

The sterilization process in CSSD is continuously validated by employing a combination of Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological monitoring methods and quality control measures and validation tests.

Ultimately, CSSD contributes to a safe and sanitized environment for both patients and healthcare providers by minimizing the risk of Hospital Associated Infections and ensuring that all instruments used during procedures are sterile and safe.
